Life is for the Living: A Tribute to My Beloved Mom

Life is for the Living: A Tribute to My Beloved Mom

3 minute read

I wish you could have met my mom. She was loving, curious, elegant, brave, generous, and fun. Always up for adventure, always optimistic, always excited to learn and discover through new experiences. She was an opera singer, a tennis player, a style maven, a good cook, a great friend, and my absolute hero.

“Life is for the living,” she often said, and she embodied that mantra ‘til the very end.

In 2020, we lost her to cancer. Some of you may sadly be familiar with the devastating sorrow of such a loss. I hope you’ve found ways to heal by keeping their spirit alive and present. For me, Over Yonder is a part of this recovery process. It represents the transition from grief to gratitude that I need and my mom deserves.

One of the many things I loved about my mom was her ability to see and appreciate details most of us overlook. It could be a surprising combination of colors, an interesting texture, a whimsical shape or beautifully fluid line, or any number of other thoughtful touches that would spark her delight and admiration. She also loved the stories behind these details. Who produced them? What inspired them? How were they made? What cultural or artistic traditions and methods did they represent?

These questions weren’t just a matter of curiosity for her, they also guided her decisions around how to adorn her life and home. Beauty, intention, and care mattered to her. In a time when so much of what we consume comes off a conveyor belt from a faceless factory in a place we’ll never see, often delivered to our doorstep overnight, I appreciate this slow and thoughtful approach more than ever.

So at Over Yonder, with each item we consider carrying, we ask, “Would my mom find this piece special and delightful? Would she enjoy it for herself, or be excited to share it as a gift?” If it doesn’t pass the Mom Test, we move on.

This process has enabled us to create a wonderfully diverse and unique collection that embraces her philosophy of “less, better, meaningful” and hopefully offers a little special something for everyone.

As I look across the collection, I wonder what some of her favorites might have been and why. I think she would have loved this Antique Pink Coral Bracelet, especially for summer. With her dark features and olive skin, coral was a beautiful color on her.

The Rosa Morada Cake Stand would also likely find its way into her cart. She loved entertaining and had a knack for creating lovely spreads.

And finally, she could not have resisted one of our Stackelbergs blankets, probably choosing the Luxury Kid Mohair throw in light taupe for its versatile color, sumptuous texture, and playful handrolled-fringe.

Of course none of these things will bring my mom back, but Over Yonder is my way of both keeping her close and sharing her with the world. We hope to bring some beauty and delight to your life as she did to ours. Thank you truly for supporting this little dream of ours.
